| Rochester, N.Y., October 31, 2008 – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team inched a bit closer to a third-consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) championship with a 2-1 victory at No. 16 University of Rochester on Friday night in Rochester, N.Y. The win for Washington University was its seventh-straight overall, and 11th-consecutive against Division III opponents. "This game was played at high level tonight. We moved the ball around well, but had to make some adjustments in the first half," said first-year head coach Jim Conlon, who picked up his 109th career victory as a women's coach and 217th overall. "Caryn Rosoff was phenomenal on the two goals, and showed tonight why she is one of the best players in the country." Rochester (10-4-2, 2-3 UAA) took an early 1-0 advantage in the 10th minute as Bridgette Varin scored off a corner kick. The Bears equalized a little more than three minutes later at 13:06 as junior Caryn Rosoff, Beverly Hills, Calif. (Harvard-Westlake) chipped UR goalkeeper Celeste Homback to knot the score at 1-1. Senior Amanda Boe, Aurora, Ill. (Waubonsie Valley), who leads the conference in saves, made several good stops to keep the game knotted at 1-1. In the 21st minute, Erin Carballo chipped Boe, but she made a nice save six-yards off the line. Rosoff, reigning UAA MVP, was not finished yet. She gave the Bears the 2-1 lead 2:36 into the second half as she collected a ball on the left wing and lifted a 20-yard shot to the right side of the net. The goal for Rosoff was her team-leading eighth of the year and 29th of her career. Two minutes later, UR's Bridgette Varin got a ball at the edge of the crease, but Boe managed to deflect a shot while she was falling in the other direction. Boe finished the contest with six saves, as Rochester outshot Washington U., 10-6. The Yellowjackets also had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Washington University (13-2-1, 5-0 UAA) plays its final road game of the season on Sunday, Nov. 2, at Case Western Reserve University. Game time is set for 11 a.m. (ET) in Cleveland, Ohio. A victory at Case Western Reserve secures the Bears its sixth UAA title in school history and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. ---------------------------------

No. 16 Washington University Men’s Soccer Picks Up 1-0 Win Over Maryville University on Monday Night
| St. Louis, Mo., October 27, 2008 – Senior forward Pierre Hoppenot scored a goal in the seventh minute of action that proved to be the game winner as the No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over Maryville University at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo., on a chilly Monday evening. The Bears took control of the game early on as Hoppenot scored his third goal of the year. Junior John Hengel possessed the ball at the top of the Maryville box and hit a streaking Hoppenot with as pass he sliced through two defenders. After finding room past the defense Hoppenot beat Maryville goalkeeper Michael Flately with a shot to the left side of the net. Washington University only had a pair of quality scoring chances through the first 45 minutes of action, and the Bears were whistled offside nine times. Sophomore Nick Wilbar registered the other quality scoring chance of the half for the Red and Green taking control of a loose ball at the 10-yard line and firing a shot that Flately had to dive to his left to knock out of bounds. WU outshot the Saints 4-0 in the first frame. As the cold air set in during the second half neither team managed to gather any momentum offensively, mustering only a combined four shots on goal. The Bears' best scoring chance of the second half came when freshman Zach Hendrickson fired a long shot from the right side of the field that careened off of the left Maryville goalpost in the 56th minute. Junior goalkeeper John Smelcer made four saves in picking up the win for the Red and Green. It was his fourth shutout of the year and the team's eighth. Washington University (11-3-1) will return to action on Friday, Oct. 31, when it travels to Rochester, N.Y., to take on University Athletic Association (UAA) rival and seventeenth ranked University of Rochester at 7:30 p.m. (ET). The Rochester game will be the first of two crucial UAA match-ups for the Bears this weekend. The squad will also face Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, Nov. 2, in Cleveland, Ohio, as they try to stay in the hunt for the 2008 conference title and a bid into the NCAA Division III tournament.

*** CENTER CIRCLE SPOTLIGHT ***
PEAK PERFORMER: U.S. MNT stalwart Landon Donovan was apparently tired of losing, and on Saturday, Sept. 20, he put his foot down, so to speak. Donovan scored a hat-trick and dished out an assist in the Los Angeles Galaxy's 5-2 victory against D.C. United. The victory ended a 12-game winless streak and was the first victory for the Galaxy under head coach Bruce Arena.

In Group D, the USL's Puerto Rico Islanders host Mexican champions Santos Laguna at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Sept. 23. All four matches will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel, check local listings for broadcast times.
SOCCER SHOCKER: It only took 193 games, but finally Kate Markgraf can count "goalscorer" among her list of many achievements with the WNT. Markgraf calmly dispatched a penalty kick during the U.S.' 2-0 victory over Ireland in the second game of the Achieve Your Gold Tour, 15,278 minutes into her national team career. "For the past 10 years, any time we've had a penalty opportunity that wasn't in a major tournament they've tried to get me to take one," said Markgraf. "Today I finally caved." Despite her newfound nose for goal, don't expect Markgraf to be starting at forward when the Tour resumes in November...
QUOTABLE: "I'm so happy for her. I coached her in Sweden with our club team and she scored a goal on a corner, but I'm so proud and happy to be a part of this, because it is her first international goal and she's been playing forever and ever."

U.S. Women Set Record Wins in a Calendar Year at 29 With 2-0 Victory Against Ireland at Toyota Park
- Markgraf Scores First Goal of International Career in 193rd Game
- U.S. Women Sweep Three-Game Series Against Ireland, Move to 29-1-1 in 2008
- Achieve Your Gold Tour Will Resume in November
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (Sept. 20, 2008) The U.S. Women's National Soccer Team swept its three-game series against Ireland with a 2-0 win on a beautiful night at Toyota Park in the third match of the Achieve Your Gold Tour.
The match was highly significant for two reasons. First, the U.S. women set a record for wins in a calendar year, picking up their 29th victory of 2008 to move to 29-1-1. The U.S. team won 28 games in 2004 while losing two and tying four.
Perhaps even more remarkable was defender Kate Markgraf scoring her first-ever international goal in her 193rd cap as she pounded home a penalty kick in the 31st minute.
Markgraf, who long ago set the U.S. record for most games without scoring, needed a bit of prodding from her teammates to run from midfield into the penalty box to take the kick, but coolly smacked her shot into the lower left corner past Ireland goalkeeper Emma Byrne to break her 192-game scoreless streak.
U.S. head coach Sundhage, the architect of the 29 wins this year and thus far the best-ever yearly winning percentage at .951, started Lindsay Tarpley at the withdrawn forward position, underneath Natasha Kai, and the moved paid off with the USA's first goal of the night.
It came in the 19th minute when Carli Lloyd slipped a short pass into the penalty box for Tarpley, who spun a one-touch right into the path of Lori Chalupny. The U.S. left back was making a darting run behind the defense and settled the ball well. She then slipped it under Irish goalkeeper Emma Byrne from 10 yards out to give the Americans the lead.
"I think the game went well," said U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage. "We knocked it around in the first half and the first goal from Lori Chalupny was excellent. I think they had a lot of fun out there and that's the most important thing. We got two goals from defenders and that's pretty great. That means we have many goal scorers and that's important."
In the 30th minute, Kai got a hold of a ball in the penalty box and was taken down as she tried to turn and bust through. Referee Jennifer Bennett immediately pointed to the spot, setting the stage for a piece of WNT history.
"I have 192 games with the National Team and scored no goals," said Markgraf. "For the past 10 years, any time we've had a penalty opportunity that wasn't in a major tournament they've tried to get me to take one. Today I finally caved and said 'okay, I'll take one today.' Some of it had to do with being here in Chicago (where she will be playing in the WPS for the Red Stars), but I also had to get rid of the pressure! Natasha Kai probably put the most pressure on me. She would always say 'I'm getting you a PK!'"
Markgraf debuted for the USA in 1997 and had played 15,278 minutes in a National Team jersey before she coolly slotted home her penalty kick. Her 193rd cap moved her past Brandi Chastain into sole possession of seventh place on the USA's all-time caps list.
"I'm so happy for her," said Sundhage of Markgraf. "I coached her in Sweden with our club team and she scored a goal on a corner, but I'm so proud and happy to be a part of this, because it is her first goal and she's been playing forever and ever."
The Americans dominated the game on the smooth pitch at Toyota Park, racking up 21 shots to Ireland's two and forcing Bryne into five saves. Ireland managed just one shot on goal.
Before the match, midfielder Shannon Boxx was honored for earning her 100th cap during the quarterfinal match at the 2008 Olympics. As is tradition, Boxx captained the U.S. team, her first time wearing the armband. It was also her 100th career start for the USA in her 105th career match.
The U.S. women will now take a break during the end of September and the month of October before hitting the field again in November for the next matches on the Achieve Your Gold Tour. The dates and venues for the remaining seven games of the tour will be announced in the near future.
