Washington U. Men’s Soccer Wins Regular Season Finale Against Chicago, 2-1

St. Louis, Mo., November 8, 2008 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-1 double overtime victory over the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo. Freshman Patrick McClean, Kingwood, Texas (Kingwood) scored the game-winner early in the second overtime as Washington University secured a least a fifth-place finish in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings. Junior John Hengel, Milwaukee, Wis. (Marquette University High) lofted a pass over the Maroon defense, and McClean corralled it, and then lofted a shot over UC goalkeeper Chris Giusto for his fourth goal of the season. Junior goalkeeper John Smelcer, St. Louis, Mo. (CBC) picked up his 12th win of the season for the Bears. Senior Ryan Kruse, Rockford, Ill. (Guilford) made the start in goal for the Red and Green and played the first 45 minutes allowing one goal and making one save. Senior Kevin Brege, Portola Valley, Calif. (Menlo School) gave the Bears the early 1-0 lead as Washington U. scored on its first shot of the day. Senior Eric Hills, Great Falls, Va. (Flint Hill School) sent a pass from 30 yards into the box to Brege, who deflected the shot past Giusto. The goal for Brege was the first of the season and fifth of his career.         Chicago (5-10-3, 1-5-1) knotted the score at 1-1 at the 43:32 mark as Edgar Friloux drilled a shot from 35 yards out through the hands of Kruse. The goal for Friloux was his third of the season. Washington U. (12-5-1, 4-3 UAA) outshot Chicago, 10-8, for the game, and had a 12-7 advantage on corner kicks. The Bears allowed seven shots in the first half, but only one in the final 58 minutes. The 2008 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament field will be announced on Monday, Nov. 10, at 8 a.m. on www.ncaa.com. Prior to the game, Washington U. honored its seven seniors who played their final game at Francis Field.
