Washington University Women’s Soccer Advances to NCAA Second Round With 3-0 Victory Over Principia College at Home

St. Louis, Mo., November 15, 2008 – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Championship with a 3-0 victory over Principia College on Saturday night at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.                Senior Caitlin Malone, Valparaiso, Ind. (Valparaiso) had two goals in the victory for the Bears, while junior Caryn Rosoff, Beverly Hills, Calif. (Harvard-Westlake) added a goal and an assist.                "We played well tonight and put together a good game plan. Our starting 11 set the tone for the match tonight," said Washington University first-year head coach Jim Conlon. "When you get your two forwards scoring and your midfielders creating, it's a good mix for the game. It's great to get a win tonight, but our goal for this weekend is to get two victories and we will have our work cut out for us tomorrow."                Rosoff gave the Bears a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute as she took a pass from senior Shirey Lane, Plano, Texas (Plano East) and beat Principia goalkeeper Mel Stein with a one-timer. The goal for Rosoff was her team-leading ninth of the season and 31st of her career. The game-winning goal was Rosoff's eighth of her career, moving her into seventh on the all-time list.                Malone scored in the 55th minute on an assist from Rosoff, and then made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute as she took a pass from senior Lauren Mehner, Cape Girardeau, Mo. (Notre Dame) down on the left side and drilled a left-footed shot from 20 yards out to the far corner. Malone now has 22 career goals, and is one shy of eighth all-time.                Senior goalkeeper Amanda Boe, Aurora, Ill. (Waubonsie Valley) made one save in 75 minutes of action, while sophomore Katy Southworth, St. Louis, Mo. (MICDS) made two saves in 15 minutes. Washington U. outshot Principia, 12-9, and had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
