No. 8 Washington University Women’s Soccer Falls at No. 22 Wheaton College, 3-0, in Sectional Semifinals of NCAA Tournament

Wheaton, Ill., November 21, 2008 – The defending NCAA Division III national champion Wheaton College women's soccer team broke a scoreless halftime tie with three second-half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over Washington University in St. Louis in the NCAA Sectional Semifinals on Friday night at Joe Bean Stadium in Wheaton, Ill.

Wheaton, the 2004, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Division III national champion, takes on the winner of Carleton College and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College on Sunday at 6 p.m. for a berth in the semifinals.

Washington U. had a golden opportunity to score just 2:14 into the contest. A ball was sent into the box and settled by junior Caryn Rosoff, Beverly Hills, Calif. (Harvard-Westlake), who found senior Caitlin Malone, Valparaiso, Ind. (Valparaiso) unmarked three feet from the goal. Malone did not get a strong foot on the ball and her shot was saved by Wheaton goalkeeper Ingrid Erickson.

Wheaton (20-2-3) controlled play the next 15 minute outshooting the Bears 5-0, including a shot by Kari Klynstra that just went over the head of WU senior goalkeeper Amanda Boe, Aurora, Ill. (Waubonsie Valley). The Thunder outshot Washington U., 8-4, but the Bears had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The wind chill dipped into the low teens in the second half, but that did not bother the Thunder as they scored the first goal of the game with a man down at 53:38. Taryn Lee, the 2007 Division III National Player of the Year, went down the backline and crossed to Kari Klynstra, who one-timed it past Boe for her 10th goal of the season.

Washington U., who is making its eighth NCAA appearance, did not fold as freshman Lee Ann Felder, Tucson, Ariz. (Catalina Foothills) got around the Thunder defense and sent a shot wide right at 55:27. Lee almost gave Wheaton its second goal at 61:14 as she blew by senior Shirey Lane, Plano, Texas (Plano East), but rolled a shot just outside the left post.

The Thunder sealed the victory with a pair of goals late in the second half. Erin Hodina scored in the 80th minute and Ali Kopelman added another at 89:20 to round out the scoring.

Wheaton outshot Washington University, 22-7, and had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Boe finished the contest with six saves in her final game with the Red and Green. The Thunder improved to 91-3-3 at home since the start of the 2002 season, and now lead the all-time series between the two teams, 7-4.

Washington U. ends its first season under head coach Jim Conlon with a 15-4-2 overall mark. The Bears won their third-straight University Athletic Association (UAA) title and sixth overall. ---------------------------------

Cleveland, Ohio, November 2, 2008 – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team captured the 2008 University Athletic Association (UAA) championship with a dramatic 2-1 win at Case Western Reserve University on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, Ohio. It marked the fourth-straight 2-1 winning decision for the Bears in conference play.

With the win, Washington U. clinched its third-straight and sixth-overall conference title, and the automatic berth to the 2008 NCAA Division III Tournament. It also marks the 125th UAA championship in Washington University school history.

"Case Western Reserve was a very good team, and they came right at us today," said Washington University first-year head coach Jim Conlon. "The second half we started moving the ball cleaner and pressed them, and was just waiting for a combination to go in. Caitlin Malone worked hard today to got herself into possession to score."

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, senior Caitlin Malone, Valparaiso, Ind. (Valparaiso) scored both second-half goals for the Bears, including the game-winner with 14 seconds left in the game. Malone, who notched the 11th game-winning goal of her career, moved into ninth on the Washington University all-time list in goals scored (20) and 11th in points (42). She also scored the game-winning goal in last-year's UAA-clinching 4-0 win at home against Case Western Reserve.

Malone headed home a cross from junior Elyse Hanly, Westborough, Mass. (Westborough) at 61:02 to knot the score at 1-1, and then took a pass from junior Caryn Rosoff, Beverly Hills, Calif. (Harvard-Westlake) and one-touched it before putting the game-winner in to the back of the net at 89:46. Washington University in St. Louis Women’s Soccer Wins at No. 16 Rochester, 2-1, For Seventh-Straight Victory

Rochester, N.Y., October 31, 2008 – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team inched a bit closer to a third-consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) championship with a 2-1 victory at No. 16 University of Rochester on Friday night in Rochester, N.Y. The win for Washington University was its seventh-straight overall, and 11th-consecutive against Division III opponents.

"This game was played at high level tonight. We moved the ball around well, but had to make some adjustments in the first half," said first-year head coach Jim Conlon, who picked up his 109th career victory as a women's coach and 217th overall. "Caryn Rosoff was phenomenal on the two goals, and showed tonight why she is one of the best players in the country."

Rochester (10-4-2, 2-3 UAA) took an early 1-0 advantage in the 10th minute as Bridgette Varin scored off a corner kick. The Bears equalized a little more than three minutes later at 13:06 as junior Caryn Rosoff, Beverly Hills, Calif. (Harvard-Westlake) chipped UR goalkeeper Celeste Homback to knot the score at 1-1.

Senior Amanda Boe, Aurora, Ill. (Waubonsie Valley), who leads the conference in saves, made several good stops to keep the game knotted at 1-1. In the 21st minute, Erin Carballo chipped Boe, but she made a nice save six-yards off the line.

Rosoff, reigning UAA MVP, was not finished yet. She gave the Bears the 2-1 lead 2:36 into the second half as she collected a ball on the left wing and lifted a 20-yard shot to the right side of the net. The goal for Rosoff was her team-leading eighth of the year and 29th of her career.

Two minutes later, UR's Bridgette Varin got a ball at the edge of the crease, but Boe managed to deflect a shot while she was falling in the other direction.

Boe finished the contest with six saves, as Rochester outshot Washington U., 10-6. The Yellowjackets also had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Washington University (13-2-1, 5-0 UAA) plays its final road game of the season on Sunday, Nov. 2, at Case Western Reserve University. Game time is set for 11 a.m. (ET) in Cleveland, Ohio. A victory at Case Western Reserve secures the Bears its sixth UAA title in school history and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

No. 16 Washington University Men’s Soccer Picks Up 1-0 Win Over Maryville University on Monday Night

St. Louis, Mo., October 27, 2008 – Senior forward Pierre Hoppenot scored a goal in the seventh minute of action that proved to be the game winner as the No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over Maryville University at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo., on a chilly Monday evening.

The Bears took control of the game early on as Hoppenot scored his third goal of the year. Junior John Hengel possessed the ball at the top of the Maryville box and hit a streaking Hoppenot with as pass he sliced through two defenders. After finding room past the defense Hoppenot beat Maryville goalkeeper Michael Flately with a shot to the left side of the net.

Washington University only had a pair of quality scoring chances through the first 45 minutes of action, and the Bears were whistled offside nine times. Sophomore Nick Wilbar registered the other quality scoring chance of the half for the Red and Green taking control of a loose ball at the 10-yard line and firing a shot that Flately had to dive to his left to knock out of bounds. WU outshot the Saints 4-0 in the first frame.

As the cold air set in during the second half neither team managed to gather any momentum offensively, mustering only a combined four shots on goal. The Bears' best scoring chance of the second half came when freshman Zach Hendrickson fired a long shot from the right side of the field that careened off of the left Maryville goalpost in the 56th minute.

Junior goalkeeper John Smelcer made four saves in picking up the win for the Red and Green. It was his fourth shutout of the year and the team's eighth.

Washington University (11-3-1) will return to action on Friday, Oct. 31, when it travels to Rochester, N.Y., to take on University Athletic Association (UAA) rival and seventeenth ranked University of Rochester at 7:30 p.m. (ET). The Rochester game will be the first of two crucial UAA match-ups for the Bears this weekend. The squad will also face Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, Nov. 2, in Cleveland, Ohio, as they try to stay in the hunt for the 2008 conference title and a bid into the NCAA Division III tournament.

Fw: No. 16 Washington University Men’s Soccer and No. 21 Dominican University (Ill.) Play to High Scoring 3-3 Draw

No. 16 Washington University Men's Soccer and No. 21 Dominican University (Ill.) Play to High Scoring 3-3 Draw

St. Louis, Mo., October 24, 2008 – The No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team let a two-goal second-half lead slip away as it played to a 3-3 tie with No. 21 Dominican University (Ill.) at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo., on Friday night. After taking a 2-1 lead into halftime, the Bears pushed their lead to 3-1 in the second, but Dominican struck twice in just 1:06 to knot the score at three goals apiece and force the tie.

Dominican entered the match-up with a 14-2 overall record and the second-highest scoring offense among all NCAA Division III teams at 4.27 goals per game. Washington U. had not played in a game this year with more than four total goals, and the Bears, who began the evening averaging 1.77 goals per game hung with the fast-paced Dominican attack.

The game was also critical for standing in the NCAA Division III Central Region. Despite Washington University's edge in the polls, Dominican entered the first NCAA regional ranking of the year ranked fourth, while the Red and Green checked in at the seventh spot.

Freshman Pat McLean scored two goals in the first half to put the Bears in the drivers seat in the early going. His first score of the night came in the seventh minute and occurred after a miscue by Dominican goalkeeper Piotr Sliwa. With McLean chasing a long pass down the right side of the field, Sliwa came out to play the ball at the corner of his box, but he faltered as McLean came bearing down on him. McLean wasted no time stripping Sliwa of the ball, which he sent into an empty net.

McLean's second goal came in the 17th minute of action. Sophomore Randall Schoen threw the ball in from the left side of the field to junior John Hengel, who dribbled directly into the Stars' box. Initially stymied by a Dominican defender, Hengel did manage to push a shot on goal. Sliwa made a save on the shot but was unable to reel in the rebound and McLean was there to take advantage of the loose ball and knock in his third score of the season.

The Stars pulled within one goal later in the first. After Schoen was whistled for a foul and handed a yellow card, Dominican's Michael Kapusta took a free kick near the Bears' end line. His pass found Stan Micic, who used his height advantage to rise over the WU defenders and head the ball past junior John Smelcer.

Hengel put the Red and Green back up by two in the second half. Taking a long pass from senior Marshall Plow, Hengel bore into the Dominican zone, and spun around the only defender separating him from Sliwa. With a good angle on the goal, he sent a shot into the right corner past a sprawling Sliwa, his team-leading eighth score of the season.

The Bears nearly pushed their lead to three goals later in the half, but what seemed like an innocuous miss at the time came back to hurt Washington U. in the end. Dominican was whistled for that appeared to take place inside of the box, but the referee spotted the ball just outside of the zone meaning there would be no penalty kick. Plow took the free kick for Washington U. and he fired a shot through the wall of Dominican defenders, which parted to let the shot through. But instead of finding the back of the net Plow's bending shot ricocheted off the left goal post and the Stars cleared it out of the zone.

Avoiding a three-goal deficit, Dominican's offense got on track. The Stars cut the score to 3-2 as Kapusta sent a long throw in from the left side to Rigoberto Barajas, who headed the ball into the middle of the field to find Aaron Romo, who then headed the ball into the net. Following that goal, Dominican marched right back into Washington U. territory and after a flurry of action in front of the net, Kapusta sent a loose ball past Smelcer to tie the game, where it remained through the two overtime periods.

Friday night's game was a rematch of the 2007 NCAA Division III Regional Final match-up between the two schools. In a game that also went into overtime last November, the Bears edged Dominican, 1-0, to advance to the NCAA sectionals. After Friday's tie, the Red and Green are 2-0-2 all-time against the Stars.

Washington U. (10-3-1) will play its final non-conference game of the season on Monday, Oct. 27, at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo. The Bears will take on Maryville University at 7 p.m.

Fw: Washington University Women’s Soccer Wins 12th-Straight Home Game With 1-0 Victory Over No. 10 Rhodes

Washington University Women's Soccer Wins 12th-Straight Home Game With 1-0 Victory Over No. 10 Rhodes
St. Louis, Mo., October 24, 2008 – The No. 11 Washington University women's soccer team extended its home winning streak to 12 games with a 1-0 victory over No. 10 Rhodes College in a top-15 match-up on Saturday morning at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo. Washington U., who leads the all-time series with Rhodes, 9-1-1, have now won 26 of its last 27 games at home.

Despite an early start at 9:30 a.m., the Bears came out with a little fire as Washington U. scored on its first shot of the game for the lone goal of the contest. Junior Caryn Rosoff, Beverly Hills, Calif. (Harvard-Westlake) gathered a lose ball in front of the Rhodes net just 31 seconds into play and beat Rhodes goalkeeper Becca Clarin with a shot to the near corner. The goal for Rosoff was her team-leading sixth of the season and 28th of her career.

Washington U. outshot Rhodes, 8-4, in the first half, and senior goalkeeper Amanda Boe, Aurora, Ill. (Waubonsie Valley) made two saves.

Boe preserved the shutout for the Bears with a diving save in the 69th minute, deflecting a shot from Ashley Nadd out of bounds for a Rhodes corner kick. She finished the contest with five saves. Washington U. outshot Rhodes 19-11 in the victory.

Washington University (12-2-1, 4-0 UAA) travels to No. 19 University of Rochester on Friday, Oct. 31, at 5 p.m. (ET), in Rochester, N.Y.

Washington University Women’s Soccer Snaps Nation’s Longest Winning Streak in 3-1 Win at Principia

The No. 18 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team snapped the nation's longest winning streak with a 3-1 win at Principia College on Tuesday night in Elsah, Ill. Principia, ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA Central Region, had won a Division III-best 13-straight games.

Junior Caryn Rosoff, Beverly Hills, Calif. (Harvard-Westlake) gave the Bears the early 1-0 lead in the 16th minute as she took a pass from junior Carter Schwarberg, Mission Hills, Kan. (Pembroke Hill) and beat Principia goalkeeper Mel Stein on a breakaway. The goal for Rosoff was her team-leading fifth of the year and 27th of her career. An evenly matched first half saw Washington U. outshoot Principia, 6-4, as WU took a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.

As Washington U. did in its loss at University of Missouri-Rolla on Oct. 1, the Bears had a lapse early in the second half that resulted in a goal. Erwin Carey's shot from 30 yards went over senior goalkeeper Amanda Boe's, Aurora, Ill. (Waubonsie Valley) outstretched arms to even the score at 1-1.

The Bears answered back seven minutes later at 69:45 to take the lead for good. Junior Elyse Hanly, Westborough, Mass. (Westborough) took a pass from junior Becca Heymman, Winchester, Mass. (Buckingham Browne & Nichols) and blasted a left-footed shot from 15 yards out to the far corner for her third goal of the season.

A clever move by Heymann resulted in the third goal of the game in the 77th minute. After Principia committed a foul 30 yards out, junior Libby Held Potomac, Md. (Winston Churchill) went to the sidelines to get instructions from head coach Jim Conlon. In the meantime, Heymann recognized Stein was setting up the wall so she blasted a shot to an open net to push the lead to 3-1.

Boe made six saves in the victory for the Bears, there sixth win in the last seven games. Principia outshot Washington U., 12-11, and the Bears had a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Washington University (8-2-1, 1-0 UAA) steps back into University Athletic Association (UAA) play against No. 9 ranked Emory University on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m.

The boys' staff coaches are led by id2 Boys' Director Gerry McKeown, who is also an assistant coach with the U.S. U-15 Boys' National Team. The coaches include:
Bob Jenkins, Head Coach of the U.S. U-18 Men's National Team and Director of Coaching and Player Development Sam Nellins, Director of Operations at PDA Soccer Club Michael Nigro, Coach at PDA Soccer Club Ronan Wiseman, Director of Training at Massapequa Soccer Club and assistant coach at Adelphi University

Mike Bristol, Director of Goalkeeping at Eclipse Select Soccer Club, will handle goalkeeping coach duties for boys and girls.
A typical daily schedule for each id2 camp places players on the training field for one or two sessions each day, with down time being utilized for guest speakers and clinicians.
Soccer Hall of Famer Tab Ramos spoke with players on opening night of the New Jersey Regional Training Camp, and it is anticipated that additional well-known soccer celebrities and personalities will attend, speak and/or participate at the New Jersey camp as well as the events in California and Texas. Further information on these guests will be provided on the id2 Web page as it becomes available.
U.S. Soccer Youth Development Program staff will be in attendance, as the id2 Regional Training Camps seek to identify and develop the country's best players for inclusion in U.S. Soccer's National Team programs.
Seven id2 participants from 2007 have advanced into the U.S. U-14 Boys' National Development Program, while many other id2 alums have advanced onto higher levels in years past. One such player is Charles Renken, a U-14 and U-15 Boys' National Team alumnus who also been a member of the U.S. U-17 Residency Program in Bradenton, Fla.
Most recently on the girls' side, Olivia Brannon (Troy, Mich./Michigan Jags) and Sarah Molina (Rocky River, Ohio/Ohio Premier) both played for the U.S. U-15 Girls' National Team in this summer's Women's Nike Friendlies.
id2 Regional Training Camps are invitation-only events that bring together the nation's top boys' and girls' youth players for four days of competition, evaluation and fun. Players are invited to participate as a result of an extensive year-long scouting program in which scouts throughout the country identify players in their own environment as they compete with their club teams.
The only cost to players involved in id2 is that of travel to the venue. Lodging, meals and a comprehensive training kit are provided by US Club Soccer and Nike.
US Club Soccer's national identification and development program concept was initiated in July 2004 when the inaugural id2 National Training Camp was held in Raleigh, N.C. From that event, six id2 participants earned invitations to U.S. Soccer's U-14 National Development Program camp and an additional 20 players were added to U.S. Soccer's U-14 player pool.
The annual National Training Camp was eliminated in 2006 in favor of three Regional Training Camps, to better accommodate interested players. The addition of girls' participants was also welcomed in 2006.
Be sure to check the id2 Regional Training Camp Web page for more information, as pictures, interviews, blogs and updates on guest speakers will be added on a daily basis at each of the camps.
