O'MARA, SMITH LEAD UMSL MEN'S SOCCER TO FIRST GLVC WIN OVER KENTUCKY WESLEYAN

ST. LOUIS, MO., September 26, 2008 – Freshman Johnny O'Mara and senior Jared Smith each recorded goals to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over visiting Kentucky Wesleyan Friday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

It was the first league win of the season for the Tritons, who improved to 5-3-1 overall, including 1-3 in the GLVC. Kentucky Wesleyan drops to 0-8 on the year, including 0-7 in the conference.

O'Mara put the Tritons up 1-0 in the 39th minute with his third goal of the season on a one-timer off a cross from senior Colin Huber.

Smith then added an insurance goal in the 65th minute, firing from five yards out on the right side on a cross from junior Blair Spencer. It was Smith's fourth goal of the season.

The Tritons finished the contest with 13 shots, while allowing just four by the Panthers. UMSL landed seven shots on goal, while Kentucky Wesleyan placed two on target. Senior Mike Bober played all 90 minutes in the keeper spot, recording two saves.

UMSL is back in action on Sunday afternoon, hosting Bellarmine in a 2:30 p.m. contest.

"We have done that through the educational programming and through Abby's presentation to the players. They will be receiving a message about healthy living and the values Glenn so fervently believed in – dedication to goals, hard work, making what you are doing fun, and in being modest about your accomplishments."

*** CENTER CIRCLE SPOTLIGHT ***

PEAK PERFORMER: U.S. MNT stalwart Landon Donovan was apparently tired of losing, and on Saturday, Sept. 20, he put his foot down, so to speak. Donovan scored a hat-trick and dished out an assist in the Los Angeles Galaxy's 5-2 victory against D.C. United. The victory ended a 12-game winless streak and was the first victory for the Galaxy under head coach Bruce Arena.

MARQUEE MATCHUP: The CONCACAF Champions League is back in action this week with two MLS and two USL clubs participating. In Group A, D.C. United takes on Honduran club CD Marathon on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. MT. USL club Impact de Montreal hosts Mexican club Atlante FC at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Sept. 24, in Group C action. In Group D, the USL's Puerto Rico Islanders host Mexican champions Santos Laguna at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Sept. 23. All four matches will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel, check local listings for broadcast times.

SOCCER SHOCKER: It only took 193 games, but finally Kate Markgraf can count "goalscorer" among her list of many achievements with the WNT. Markgraf calmly dispatched a penalty kick during the U.S.' 2-0 victory over Ireland in the second game of the Achieve Your Gold Tour, 15,278 minutes into her national team career. "For the past 10 years, any time we've had a penalty opportunity that wasn't in a major tournament they've tried to get me to take one," said Markgraf. "Today I finally caved." Despite her newfound nose for goal, don't expect Markgraf to be starting at forward when the Tour resumes in November...

QUOTABLE: "I'm so happy for her. I coached her in Sweden with our club team and she scored a goal on a corner, but I'm so proud and happy to be a part of this, because it is her first international goal and she's been playing forever and ever."
-- U.S. WNT head coach Pia Sundhage on Kate Markgraf scoring her first international goal on Saturday, Sept. 20, in the 2-0 win against Ireland.

U.S. Women Set Record Wins in a Calendar Year at 29 With 2-0 Victory Against Ireland at Toyota Park

  • Markgraf Scores First Goal of International Career in 193rd Game
  • U.S. Women Sweep Three-Game Series Against Ireland, Move to 29-1-1 in 2008
  • Achieve Your Gold Tour Will Resume in November

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (Sept. 20, 2008) – The U.S. Women's National Soccer Team swept its three-game series against Ireland with a 2-0 win on a beautiful night at Toyota Park in the third match of the Achieve Your Gold Tour.

The match was highly significant for two reasons. First, the U.S. women set a record for wins in a calendar year, picking up their 29th victory of 2008 to move to 29-1-1. The U.S. team won 28 games in 2004 while losing two and tying four.

Perhaps even more remarkable was defender Kate Markgraf scoring her first-ever international goal in her 193rd cap as she pounded home a penalty kick in the 31st minute.

Markgraf, who long ago set the U.S. record for most games without scoring, needed a bit of prodding from her teammates to run from midfield into the penalty box to take the kick, but coolly smacked her shot into the lower left corner past Ireland goalkeeper Emma Byrne to break her 192-game scoreless streak.

U.S. head coach Sundhage, the architect of the 29 wins this year and thus far the best-ever yearly winning percentage at .951, started Lindsay Tarpley at the withdrawn forward position, underneath Natasha Kai, and the moved paid off with the USA's first goal of the night.

It came in the 19th minute when Carli Lloyd slipped a short pass into the penalty box for Tarpley, who spun a one-touch right into the path of Lori Chalupny. The U.S. left back was making a darting run behind the defense and settled the ball well. She then slipped it under Irish goalkeeper Emma Byrne from 10 yards out to give the Americans the lead.

"I think the game went well," said U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage. "We knocked it around in the first half and the first goal from Lori Chalupny was excellent. I think they had a lot of fun out there and that's the most important thing. We got two goals from defenders and that's pretty great. That means we have many goal scorers and that's important."

In the 30th minute, Kai got a hold of a ball in the penalty box and was taken down as she tried to turn and bust through. Referee Jennifer Bennett immediately pointed to the spot, setting the stage for a piece of WNT history.

"I have 192 games with the National Team and scored no goals," said Markgraf. "For the past 10 years, any time we've had a penalty opportunity that wasn't in a major tournament they've tried to get me to take one. Today I finally caved and said 'okay, I'll take one today.' Some of it had to do with being here in Chicago (where she will be playing in the WPS for the Red Stars), but I also had to get rid of the pressure! Natasha Kai probably put the most pressure on me. She would always say 'I'm getting you a PK!'"

Markgraf debuted for the USA in 1997 and had played 15,278 minutes in a National Team jersey before she coolly slotted home her penalty kick. Her 193rd cap moved her past Brandi Chastain into sole possession of seventh place on the USA's all-time caps list.

"I'm so happy for her," said Sundhage of Markgraf. "I coached her in Sweden with our club team and she scored a goal on a corner, but I'm so proud and happy to be a part of this, because it is her first goal and she's been playing forever and ever."

The Americans dominated the game on the smooth pitch at Toyota Park, racking up 21 shots to Ireland's two and forcing Bryne into five saves. Ireland managed just one shot on goal.

Before the match, midfielder Shannon Boxx was honored for earning her 100th cap during the quarterfinal match at the 2008 Olympics. As is tradition, Boxx captained the U.S. team, her first time wearing the armband. It was also her 100th career start for the USA in her 105th career match.

The U.S. women will now take a break during the end of September and the month of October before hitting the field again in November for the next matches on the Achieve Your Gold Tour. The dates and venues for the remaining seven games of the tour will be announced in the near future.

Fw: Hengel Scores Twice to Lead Washington University Men’s Soccer to 2-0 Win Over Denison University; Win is Third in a Row for the Bears

Clayton, Mo., September 13, 2008 – Junior John Hengel scored a pair of goals to lead the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Denison University as a part of the Washington University/Fontbonne University Classic at Gay Field in Clayton, Mo., on Saturday night.

Senior Pierre Hoppenot assisted Hengel's first goal, which came just 10:07 into the game. Hoppenot streaked down the field and made a pass to Hengel inside of the box, which he handled and then sidestepped Denison goalkeeper Kevin Donahue to send the shot into the net.

Hengel scored again three minutes into the second half when a WU player was taken down inside of the box, resulting in a penalty kick that Hengel hammered home.

Washington University controlled most of the game on the offensive end, holding an 18-6 advantage in shots and 13-5 in shots on goal. WU junior goalkeeper John Smelcer started in goal and picked up the win in 80 scoreless minutes of play. Smelcer made three saves and senior Ryan Kruse made a pair of saves in his 10 minutes in net.

The win is the Bears' third in a row, and the team's third-straight shutout.  Washington University is now 4-0-0 all-time against the Denison Big Red. It was the second night in a row a player for Washington U. scored two goals in a game, as sophomore Harry Beddo accomplished the same feat in the Red and Green's 3-0 win over Southwestern on Friday night at Francis Field.

Washington University (4-2) returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 18, when the team will return to Gay Field in Clayton, Mo., to take on Fontbonne University. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Beddo Leads Washington University Men’s Soccer Past Southwestern, 3-0

St. Louis, Mo., September 12, 2008 – Sophomore Harry Beddo, Oak Hill, Va. (Thomas Jefferson) scored two goals and junior Nat Zenner, Evanston, Ill. (Evanston Township) added another as the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team posted a 3-0 win over Southwestern University on Friday night at the 2008 WU/Fontbonne Classic on Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.

Beddo gave the Bears a 1-0 lead at 23:02 when he took a cross from freshman Zach Hendrickson, Northridge, Calif. (Chaminade College Prep) and headed home his first goal of the season.

Junior goalkeeper John Smelcer, St. Louis, Mo. (CBC) kept the score the same in the 34th minute when he made a diving save off a shot from Southwestern's David Lazono. The save for Smelcer was his first of the season in the opening half of play, as Washington U. has given up just one first-half goal in five games played.

Beddo scored his second goal of the game off a rebound in the 58th minute to push the lead to 2-0. The goal for Beddo was the 11th of his career. Zenner scored an insurance goal at 59:10 as he drilled a free kick from 30 yards out past Southwestern goalkeeper Ryan Tasin to push the lead to 3-0.

SIUE Men's Soccer

Cougars Down Wright State

DAYTON, OHIO - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville scored three unanswered goals Friday night and defeated Wright State 3-1 in men's college soccer action.

The Cougars evened their record to 2-2 with the road victory. SIUE heads to IUPU-Ft. Wayne Sunday for a 12:30 p.m. ET matchup with the Mastodons.

"We talk about playing a complete 90 minutes," said SIUE coach Kevin Kalish. "It was close to a complete game."

Kalish said a number of players stepped up against Wright State, now 1-5. Both Chris Anzalone and Nash Maduekwe scored their first collegiate goals. Benny Jeffery scored an unassisted goal at 83:20 to put the Cougars ahead by two goals.

SIUE, which outshot Wright State 11-9, didn't start well against the Raiders. Braden Fleak scored his third goal of the season at 11:18 off an assist from Jabari Velinor.

Anzalone tied the game at 37:28 on a header from the far post on a pass from Bob Ridder. Maduekwe's goal was a heads-up play at 55:28 when Jeffery had a shot saved by Raiders goalkeeper Aaron Ritter. Maduekwe was there for the follow up.

"Nash came off the bench and gave us a spark," said Kalish.
Nick Collico earned the win in goal. He collected five saves for the Cougars.

ST. LOUIS, MO. , September 10, 2008 – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team finished in a 2-2 double overtime tie against Upper Iowa Wednesday night in the Tritons' home opener at Don Dallas Field.

UMSL remains unbeaten on the season, moving to 3-0-1, while Upper Iowa moves to 2-3-1.

The Tritons got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick by junior Blair Spencer in the 22nd minute. It was Spencer's team-leading fourth goal of the season, and kept his streak alive of scoring a goal in each game this season.

The Peacocks connected on a penalty kick of their own in the 30th minute sending both teams into halftime in a 1-1 tie.

Upper Iowa took its first lead of the game two minutes into the second half when Derek Oelmann fired in a shot off a rebound.

Senior Jared Smith scored the final goal of the game, finding the back of the net on a free kick in the 50th minute.

Fw: Washington University Men’s Soccer Scores Twice in the Second Half to Defeat Principia, 2-0, in 2008 Home Opener at Francis Field

Washington University Men's Soccer Scores Twice in the Second Half to Defeat Principia, 2-0, in 2008 Home Opener at Francis Field

St. Louis, Mo., September 9, 2008 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to defeat Principia College, 2-0, in the Bears' 2008 home opener at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo., on Tuesday night. The win was Washington University's first shutout of the season and evens the team's overall record at 2-2.

Washington U. controlled what was mostly a defensive game in the first half, outshooting the Panthers, 5-0, and recording four shots on goal. Principia's best scoring chance came 11 minutes into the game when Aaron Springston controlled a ball deep inside the Bears' zone, but he was unable to fire a shot attempt before being forced off the ball by a WU defender.

The Red and Green nearly took a one-goal lead with 6:44 remaining in the first period. Junior Ryan Grandin came streaking down the left side of the field and fired a long pass to senior Eric Hill. Easily controlling the ball, Hill sent a shot back toward the left side of the goal, but Principia keeper Samuel Thomas was in good position, enabling him to stretch out and make the save, preserving the 0-0 tie.

Both teams picked up the pace of play in the second half, but the Red and Green managed to create more quality scoring chances and found the back of the net twice. Junior John Hengel scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for Washington U. in the 65th minute. Sophomore David Klein controlled the ball deep left-side of the Principia zone and fired a pass into the middle of the box that Hengel one-timed into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

WU senior Kevin Brege nearly gave the Bears a two-goal lead in the 73rd minute on one of his three near misses in the second half. On that play, senior Kellen Hayes sent a long pass from the right side towards Brege in the box, which he toed past Thomas but to the left of the net. Brege fired three shots in the second half, two coming on goal.

The Bears' insurance goal came on a much simpler play with just 2:11 remaining in regulation. Noticing Samuels was playing too far up the field, Washington University freshman Zach Hendrickson skied a ball from 20-yards out that was too high for Samuels to play, dropping into the goal. Hendrickson's score was also his first of the year. So far in 2008 Washington University has scored six goals from six different goal scorers.

The win improves Washington University to 33-5-1 all-time against Principia College. The Bears picked up a 2-0 win over the Panthers last season in Elsah, Ill.

Washington University (2-2) will return to action on Friday, Sept. 12, when it begins competition in the two-day Washington University/Fontbonne University Classic. The Bears will host Southwestern University on Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo., at 8 p.m.
