Washington U. Women's Soccer Suffers First Defeat of Season in 1-0 Loss at Chapman

Orange, Calif., Sept. 4, 2008
– The No. 9 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team suffered its first defeat in a 1-0 loss at Chapman University on Thursday night in Orange, Calif.

An evenly played first half saw Washington U. outshoot Chapman, 5-4, but neither team could find the back of the net. Washington U. took control in the second half, outshooting Chapman, 10-4, but did not capitalize on a few scoring opportunities. The Bears hit the crossbar two times in the second half of play.

Chapman (1-2) ended a three-game scoring drought in the 86th minute of the contest with its first goal of the season. After junior Libby Held, Potomac, Md. (Winston Churchill) picked up a yellow card, Chapman's Brittany Botterill sent a free kick into the box, which was not cleared out by the Bears.

Tara Cozens corralled the loose ball, and drilled a shot past Washington U. senior goalkeeper Amanda Boe, Aurora, Ill. (Waubonsie Valley) for the game-winning goal. Boe made four saves in the loss for the Bears.

Washington University (2-1) continues its three-game road trip in Redlands, California, on Friday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. against University of Redlands.
