No. 6 Washington University Men’s Soccer Comes From Behind to Defeat Birmingham Southern College, 2-1

Birmingham, Ala., August 31, 2008 – The No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis' men's soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals to overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit and defeat Birmingham Southern College, 2-1, at the Birmingham Southern Labor Day Classic in Birmingham, Ala., on Sunday afternoon

Looking for its first win of the year, Washington U. found itself trailing 1-0 in the 22nd minute of the game when Birmingham Southern's Garner Shivers scored off of a corner kick opportunity to put the Panthers in front.

In the second half, seniors took over for Washington University as forward Marshall Plow and midfielder Kellen Hayes each found the back of the net.

Plow scored the tying goal just 5:30 into the second half, coming from the left side to beat Birmingham Southern goalkeeper Hal Halbert. Hayes' winning goal came nearly 20 minutes later, and was unassisted in the 71st minute and the Red and Green held on for a one-goal win. The Bears finished the game with a 12-4 advantage in shots and WU recorded three more shots on goal than the Panthers in a game where neither team managed to generate much offense.

Washington University (1-1) will continue its three-game road swing to start the 2008 season next Saturday, Sept. 6, when the Bears travel to Fulton, Mo., to take on the Westminster College Bluejays. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
