St. Louis, Mo., September 12, 2008 – Sophomore Harry Beddo, Oak Hill, Va. (Thomas Jefferson) scored two goals and junior Nat Zenner, Evanston, Ill. (Evanston Township) added another as the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team posted a 3-0 win over Southwestern University on Friday night at the 2008 WU/Fontbonne Classic on Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo. Beddo gave the Bears a 1-0 lead at 23:02 when he took a cross from freshman Zach Hendrickson, Northridge, Calif. (Chaminade College Prep) and headed home his first goal of the season. Junior goalkeeper John Smelcer, St. Louis, Mo. (CBC) kept the score the same in the 34th minute when he made a diving save off a shot from Southwestern's David Lazono. The save for Smelcer was his first of the season in the opening half of play, as Washington U. has given up just one first-half goal in five games played. Beddo scored his second goal of the game off a rebound in the 58th minute to push the lead to 2-0. The goal for Beddo was the 11th of his career. Zenner scored an insurance goal at 59:10 as he drilled a free kick from 30 yards out past Southwestern goalkeeper Ryan Tasin to push the lead to 3-0. Smelcer played 70 minutes in the net making one save to pick up his 30th-career victory. Senior Ryan Kruse, Rockford, Ill. (Guilford) saw action in the final 20 minutes, making one save. Head coach Joe Clarke also picked up his 130th career victory at Washington University in the win. Washington U. outshot Southwestern 11-7, and had a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks. Washington University (3-2) returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m., against Denison University in the 2008 WU/Fontbonne Classic. The game will be played on Gay Field at Clayton High School in Clayton, Mo.
