Clayton, Mo., September 13, 2008 – Junior John Hengel scored a pair of goals to lead the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Denison University as a part of the Washington University/Fontbonne University Classic at Gay Field in Clayton, Mo., on Saturday night. Senior Pierre Hoppenot assisted Hengel's first goal, which came just 10:07 into the game. Hoppenot streaked down the field and made a pass to Hengel inside of the box, which he handled and then sidestepped Denison goalkeeper Kevin Donahue to send the shot into the net. Hengel scored again three minutes into the second half when a WU player was taken down inside of the box, resulting in a penalty kick that Hengel hammered home. Washington University controlled most of the game on the offensive end, holding an 18-6 advantage in shots and 13-5 in shots on goal. WU junior goalkeeper John Smelcer started in goal and picked up the win in 80 scoreless minutes of play. Smelcer made three saves and senior Ryan Kruse made a pair of saves in his 10 minutes in net. The win is the Bears' third in a row, and the team's third-straight shutout. Washington University is now 4-0-0 all-time against the Denison Big Red. It was the second night in a row a player for Washington U. scored two goals in a game, as sophomore Harry Beddo accomplished the same feat in the Red and Green's 3-0 win over Southwestern on Friday night at Francis Field. Washington University (4-2) returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 18, when the team will return to Gay Field in Clayton, Mo., to take on Fontbonne University. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
