Cougars Travel to Wright State, IPFW
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer team get a double dose of travel this week with contests at Wright State and IUPU-Ft. Wayne.
SIUE, 1-2, matches up with the Raiders, of the Horizon League, Friday in Dayton, Ohio, at 7 p.m. The Cougars then head to Fort Wayne, Ind., to renew their rivalry Sunday at 3 p.m. with the Mastodons, members of the Summit League. SIUE and IPFW played five times from 1996 to 2000 when the two teams competed in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Wright State, 0-4, enters the game looking for its first victory of the season. IPFW holds an 0-2-1 record and plays Wright State tonight.
SIUE Coach Kevin Kalish said the Cougars have to focus on their own offense and defensive structure heading into the weekend.
"It is important for our team to minimize minor mistakes against Wright State," Kalish said. "We need to keep our play at a high level in each game."
The Cougars look to rally from a 3-2 overtime loss at Northern Illinois. Kalish said the Cougars played well for a good portion of the game against the Huskies. Ryan Wilhelm (St. Louis) and Nick Bigogno (St. Louis) both scored their first goals of the season. Cougar goalkeeper Nick Frasca made nine saves.
"We want to make sure and concentrate on our style play," Kalish said. "We want to get better with each game."
